The Colonial Virginia Chapter of the Model T Ford Club of America (MTFCA) and Model T Ford Club International (MTFCI) met via a Microsoft Teams meeting on Wednesday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m.
- Jay Pearsall opened the discussion and welcomed everyone to the meeting. He wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Jay presented a couple of topics and then opened the floor to other discussion items.
- Jay received a letter from the Treasurer of the MTFCA, Keith Gumbinger, soliciting end of year donations from any club member to the Model T Museum in Richmond, Indiana. The museum is committed to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting artifacts from the Model T Ford era. Jay indicated he will send out a copy of the letter to our club members and friends.
- Jay also received a request from the Vice President, MTFCA, Kathy Tagert. She asked if our club would consider hosting the 2025 MTFCA National Tour in our area. Jay indicated our club cannot undertake a project of this proportion without the assistance of our sister clubs in the area, namely the Central Virginia Model T Club and the Albemarle Area Model T Club. Jay indicated many decisions need to be made before we can make a commitment (host location; itinerary—where do you drive; parking availability; hotel capacity/availability etc.). He said it really comes down to three clubs deciding where to host such an event and if they can support it. Lots of discussions followed. Max Lindsay also made the point that we would have to conduct dry runs of all the routes. He brought up the difficulty of living on the peninsula where we are land locked by the James and York Rivers. He said, however; west of Richmond is a different story. Bryan Daniel mentioned there was a national tour in this area in 2009 and the MTFCA may have a library of what transpired during that event. Finally, Jay said there are issues to consider such as traffic impedance on some routes which are posted at 55 mph. At 30 – 35 mph, we potentially could cause traffic issues. Jay said there is no decision timeline for now and Kathy Tagert will send us a checklist of items to consider. Right after our meeting adjourned, the Albemarle Area Chapter President, John Long, contacted Jay and said, “We would love to have you guys attend our annual first of the year chapter meeting giving information on the request for an east coast tour. Time of our meeting to be set later. We will keep you informed.”
- Jay recently met with Ty Bland in Toano to help him with his 1925 Depot Hack. Ty donated the vehicle to a local museum with the understanding that he will keep it in running order so he can drive it in local parades and events. He is reaching out to anyone in our club who can possibly help him work on his car. Contact Jay for further details and to get in touch with Ty.
- Jon Bitler said we had great participation in the Williamsburg Christmas Parade and thanks to everyone who participated. We had six Model Ts in this year’s themed parade “Merry and Bright.” Mike Denbar’s Chiefs car was brightly decorated and with a leaking radiator, he was “Steaming All The Way,” but he successfully made it to the end of the parade route and all way back to Jay’s house.
- Max talked about the Poquoson Christmas parade he participated in. He said you can toss candy out to the spectators and there was a “gauntlet of children” you had to pass to get through the parade. He said he was late to register, but next year he will find out dates earlier so more of us can participate. Alex also mentioned the Gloucester parade as a possibility.
- Bryan mentioned the swap meet in Luray next year saying it is a golden opportunity to find hard to get parts and pieces for your Ts. He also talked about his trip to Hershey, PA. He said if you can spare the time, go the day before it starts as you can get some good deals on parts or even cars.
- Jay mentioned he received his new starter and briefly talked about some of the Bendix issues club members have been experiencing.
- Alex Ott said he has an engine knock in his 1916 Chemical Truck and only when he running at a high RPM with an advanced spark. This may indicate some future engine work ahead. Jay mentioned a similar issue with Steve Tetreault’s 1926 Model T pickup, but recent problems with his engine is pointing toward another rebuild is in his future. Jay is trying to find a suitable spare engine setup that can be used to keep our club members on the road when they experience engine failures. He said it’s just one of his many projects.
- Jay put in a pitch to everyone that Mel King needs assistance with replacing the bushing in his torque tube; assistance on recurving leaf springs; and setting the gap measurement between his magnets and the field coils on his magneto. Max is also trying to reset the gap for his magneto that he disassembled for his engine rebuild. He has two sets of magnets that he now plans to remeasure. His intention is to pair up like sized magnets to reduce the variations in gaps between the magnets and field coils.
- Bron Prokuski would like to get in touch with Alex about Alex’s chemical truck. Bron has a Model T fire truck from the West Hurley New York Fire Department and would like to compare notes with Alex. Jay said he would send an email to Bron with the contact information.
- Finally, Alex proposed that we set up a “Frostbite Tour” this winter perhaps in January, February, or March. This would be on a local route just to go out and have some fun driving our Model Ts.
Next Meeting: TBD by the Board of Directors.

The Colonial Virginia Chapter of the Model T Ford Club of America (MTFCA) and Model T Ford Club International (MTFCI) met via a Microsoft Teams meeting on Tuesday October 25th at 7:00 p.m.
- Jay Pearsall opened the discussion and welcomed everyone to the meeting. He indicated the topics would be the Williamsburg Christmas Parade, T Projects members are currently working and then opening the floor to any member.
- The Williamsburg Christmas Parade theme for this year is “Merry and Bright” and suggests we should encourage a grand illumination of our Model Ts in lights. Special thanks go out to Steve Tetreault and Jon Bitler who registered us for the parade and to Ty Bland who paid for our club’s $50 entry fee. The parade starts at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday December 4, 2022. If you are trailering your Model T to Williamsburg, you can park at the Jamestown/Williamsburg airport and drive over to Jay’s home. Plan to be at Jay’s house no later than 2:30 p.m. before we drive over to the staging area. We need to line up at the staging area by 3:00 p.m., but no later than 4:00 p.m. This year we will drive two cars abreast in line on the parade route to reduce the overall length of the parade.
- Max opened the T Projects discussion with details of his 1921 Roadster magneto rebuild. He received a new magneto coil assembly, freshly charged magnets, magnet bolts, aluminum spool spacers, magnet clamps (plates) and all the additional nuts/bolts and hardware to make his rebuild project a reality. The dilemma that Max is working through is the exact spacing between the plates on top of each magnet and their associated distance from the flywheel ring gear. He wants to create a concentric plane such that each magnet plate will be the same distance from the magneto coils when installed. Additionally, he trying to ascertain the torque values of the various bolts. It was a great discussion and learning experience for those of us who have never rebuilt the magneto assembly.
- Mel is working on his 1915 Roadster and requested club assistance to get his coil setup and drive shaft installed on the rear axle.
- Trey said he has everything needed to put his 1924 Roadster back together and is motivated by fact he needs the space where most of his parts reside. This is because of a new building project that is soon to start for his business. He indicated next spring might be a good time put out a call for a Model T work party to help him turn his parts and pieces back into a roadworthy automobile.
- Next Jay said he received a call from Bob Richmon of the Central Virginia Club inviting us to participate in a tour of the back roads of Goochland and Louisa Counties on November 12, 2022. More to follow as details become available.
- Jay also received an invitation for us to participate in the 3rd Annual Kiwanis Club Car Show at Langley Speedway on Sunday April 30, 2023. The show is from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Kiwanis Club is hoping to get as many pre-war cars as possible to the show. More to follow on this event as details become available.
- A suggestion from the floor was made to have meetings every 4 to 6 weeks so that we can keep the pulse on everyone’s ongoing projects.

The Colonial Virginia Chapter of the Model T Ford Club of America (MTFCA) and Model T Ford Club International (MTFCI) met via Zoom conference for a meeting on Sunday July 31, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.
- Jay Pearsall began by talking about the two national tours that happened this summer. The MTFCA sponsored their summer tour in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin June 19 – 24, 2022. Max attended this tour and drove his 1915 Touring Car. The MTFCI sponsored their national tour in Hamilton, Ohio July 17 – 22, 2022 and Scott attended this tour with his 1920 Touring Car. Both came home with an appreciation of long-distance driving in the Model T and dealing with unforeseen problems on the road.
- Scott first talked about the tour in Hamilton, Ohio. He said he drove 327 miles before parking his car in his trailer on Wednesday evening of the tour week. He hitched a ride with another couple for the Thursday and Friday drives. The week started out with an opening banquet on Sunday. The day was highlighted by heavy rains lasting through the night into the next day. Everyone got soaked and all the Model Ts got a free car wash! On Monday, the starter went out on Scott’s car, but he said it crank started without any issues. He was also able to purchase a new starter and he replaced it on Monday night. On Tuesday, the fan pulley seized and ceased to operate. Again, he was able to buy a new fan pulley and he replaced it on Tuesday night. You can kind of see where this is going. On Wednesday, the brakes failed while descending a steep hill. Scott was able to address the issue during a lunch stop and get enough brake back to make it back to the hotel. Later that same day, the low-speed band ceased to operate, but Scott didn’t give up as he limped back to the Hamilton, OH hotel. Some of the highlights of this trip were creek crossings in the Model T, traveling through multiple covered bridges and visiting the Model T Museum in Richmond, Indiana where the Five Millionth Model T off the assembly line is on display. As an added bonus, Scott received an award at the closing banquet for the most car troubles during the tour. Details are forthcoming in the next issue of the MTFCI magazine.
- Max talked about his trip next. He thoroughly enjoyed going and even enjoyed the long drive out and back (gas prices another story). The trip involved mostly rural farmland driving, but also included some larger hills at the Holy Hill Bascilica in Hubertus, WI. A tour and several laps around the track at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI were another highlight where he got to rev- up the engine and ‘let her rip’… as much as a T can actually rip.
Making new friends was a great part of this tour for Max and he was able to finish the tour riding with Rob Maasch, his wife, daughter, and granddaughter. Several pounds were added as he learned that these folks like to eat and drink… everywhere. He thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and would definitely attend, schedule permitting.
- There were many lessons learned from these national tours. Bring plenty of sunscreen and extra t-shirts to work on cars. Bring and drink plenty of water. The MTFCI provided water, ice and snacks to take with at the beginning of each daily drive. Bron mention to have extra nuts, bolts and washers on hand because long drives tend to rattle things loose. An extra gas can doesn’t hurt for the long drives well as water/antifreeze for your radiator. Bring extra oil and a grease gun. Bring some glass cleaner and paper towels for cleaning those country bugs of the windshield. Don’t forget wheel chocks, a jack to change a flat tire, a first aid kit, and a fire extinguisher. Follow MTFCI checklist to prepare your vehicle for the trip.
- Bron mentioned a potential Albemarle Club trip in September to the Outer Banks. He also mentioned a possible tour in the Oct/Nov timeframe. Jay said he’d like Trey to come up with a date for another tour in the Smithfield area in the next couple of months for our club as well.
- Next year’s MTFCA tour will begin on Sunday June 18th in Manhatten, KS. The MTFCI tour be July 16 – 21, 2023, and will be in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Located in central Wisconsin, this tour will start at the Devil’s Head Resort. More information is available at this link: Home (2023modelttour.com)

The Colonial Virginia Chapter of the Model T Ford Club of America (MTFCA) and Model T Ford Club International (MTFCI) met via Zoom conference for a meeting on Wednesday February 23, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. We had lots of good discussion about upcoming events and planned tours.
- Jay Pearsall began discussing the two national tours planned for this year. Both MTFCA and MTFCI require you to be a member to participate on their respective tours. MTFCA is sponsoring their summer tour in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. It is scheduled for June 19 – 24, 2022. MTFCI selected Hamilton, Ohio for their national tour this year. They scheduled the tour July 17 – 22, 2022. We have a few members from our club expecting to join both tours. Registration is still ongoing and can be found in the by-monthly magazines published by each organization.
- Jay recommended every club member inspect and lubricate their vehicle before we begin spring excursions. Specifically, he mentioned the drive shaft front bearing and the universal joint. Sometimes they’re easy to skip over because they are under the floorboards in the front of the car. They play a critical role by ensuring the drive shaft bushing and u-joint has sufficient lubrication for normal driving operations.
- Jay also mentioned MTFCA and MTFCI require an annual update of our club’s roster to include membership numbers of everyone in our club associated with the respective national organizations. Please take a moment to review the attached roster Jay sent out to everyone via email on the 19th of February. Send your updates directly to Jay.
- Bryan Daniel mentioned a new Model T Ford Service Manual he received and get this, it’s printed on 8½ x 11 book paper. The larger size manual makes it easier to see detail in the drawings. Bryan said the books sell for $28.95 and can be ordered from the motorbookstore.com.
- Scott talked about a solution for charging his iPhone while on the road. His research led to a 12V motorcycle charger/adapter with two USB ports. It converts a 12V DC input to a 5V DC output. Further details will be in the next issue or our club’s newsletter.
- Want to help our club plan a spring tour? Jay is looking for one or more of us to sponsor a spring tour so we can all get together and go out for a drive. One possible option is going to Gloucester or Matthews County like we did in the past. He also mentioned Smithfield. Any short-day trip around 40 – 60 miles would be great. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just fun for all of us to enjoy. Please consider helping our club plan something for spring.
- Jay talked about our sister club, the Albemarle Area Chapter and their upcoming events. They are planning events for April, May, and June. Some of us have previously been on their local tours. They always do a great job taking us to interesting places in the Albemarle region of southern Virginia and North Carolina. Their annual meeting is planned for Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Captain Bob's BBQ and Seafood, Rt 17, 310 Ocean Highway South, Hertford and you’re welcomed to attend. RSVP to their club secretary Bron Prokuski at (703) 346-7510.
- Trey asked for all club members to submit articles for the newsletter. He said even if you just have an idea submit it to him. As you know, Trey’s mastery of prose will turn your thoughts and ideas into a captivating story of Model T history. Every one of us has a Model T story to tell no matter how insignificant you think it might be. So please take a minute and send Trey something for the next club newsletter.
- Our website needs a revision and Trey asked that every club member go out and review what’s already online. Send him recommendations for updates. He specifically needs pictures of you and your vehicles. You can find the current ones he has under Our History tab on the home page at: colonial Virginia model t club - Home (weebly.com) Please submit other recommendations for changes to the web site directly to Trey as well.
- Bryan mentioned club shirts, jackets and t-shirts along with license plate toppers are available for purchase.
- Before we adjourned, Jay opened the meeting up for general comments and discussion.
- Alex mentioned the latest addition to his collection. He said it’s a 1916 Model T fire truck capable of pumping water at 60 PSI. That’s definitely something we need to see on our spring travels across the countryside.
- Mel talked about the restoration of 1923 Roadster. He is nearing completion of his showroom project and hopes to have it back on the road soon.

The Colonial Virginia Chapter of the Model T Ford Club International met via Zoom conference for a meeting on Wednesday November 3, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. We discussed upcoming events and planned tours.
- Jay Pearsall began the meeting by opening the floor for nominations to elect new officers for 2022. No one came forward to alter the current board composition. Jay then asked for a motion to nominate the current board which Scott Nylund put forward and Max Lindsey seconded. A vote by the club membership affirmed the current elected members for the calendar year 2022.
- The next item of business was a discussion on whether our club should be affiliate with the Model T Ford Club of America (MTFCA) in addition to the Model T Ford Club International (MTFCI) which we are a currently a charter member. Some of our members are already associated with both national clubs. We discussed the benefit of the two associations as well as the opportunity to participate in different national events and drives. Also mentioned was the wealth of information and publications that we can leverage through two memberships. Club members were all in agreement that we should pursue this opportunity.
- Bryan Daniel led the next discussion on our club logo design. Bryan said he is ordering approximately ten license plate toppers with the following design: If you’re interested in purchasing a plate topper contact Bryan at [email protected]. In the near future, you will also be able to order T-shirts, Polo shirts and jackets with this embroidered design. Bryan will provide addition information on how you can place an order at a later date. You decide the size, color and quantity of the items you wish to order and place them directly through the vendor.
- Next, Jon Bitler talked about the upcoming Williamsburg Christmas parade. Jon said it would be great if we were able to provide at least ten vehicles for the parade. The evening event is scheduled for Sunday, December 5, 2021. Participates from our club will meet at approximately 3:00 p.m. on the day of the event. Staging will be no later than 4:30 p.m. and the parade will begin at 5:00 p.m. The two-mile route begins on Richmond Rd and Brook Street and takes us through Williamsburg. The theme for the event is “Joy to the World.” The organizers request we decorate our cars with appropriate holiday decorations (Christmas lights, decorations, hats, flashing necklaces etc.); however, they are asking we display no representation of Santa Claus as he will be on the final float of the parade. Also, the parade route will be well lit, and cars will not be allowed to have their headlights or taillights on while in the parade. Cars will continually move through the parade route at recommended intervals of 5 – 10 feet. No stopping will be allowed, and no candy or other gifts may be tossed to spectators on the route. Please contact Jon Bitler, [email protected] if you plan to be there so he can get a head count on who would like to participate. Parking is available for trailers and offloading vehicles. Jon will provide additional information to participants in the coming weeks.
- We have a new member! Jay welcomed Alex Ott as our newest member of the club. We met Alex at the 19th Annual Virginia Fall Classic Car Show on October 23rd at the Newport News Park. Alex lives in Gloucester and drives a 1924 Touring car. He also has access to a Model T Fire Engine in Pennsylvania which he plans to bring here in the future. Jay reminded everyone to put out the word about our club so we can continue to expand our membership. The best part of the Colonial Virginia Model T Ford Club is it’s free. No dues or fees are collected to become a member.
- Next, Bryan talked about our photo shoot of club vehicles. Due to weather and ongoing renovations at the Lee Hall Mansion our photo opportunity on October 30th was postponed. We do have a professional photographer planned for the event when it’s rescheduled. We also discussed moving the photo shoot to the Lee Hall Train Depot. We’d like to get as many club vehicles as we can to the event and encourage members and their guests dress up in period clothing (although it’s not required to attend and have your Model T photographed). After the photos are taken, we plan to drive our Model Ts around the area and enjoy the afternoon. Bryan will send out additional information as it becomes available. Please keep this in mind and join us when we get everything rescheduled.
- Jay talked about two national tours next year and ask club members to participate. Both clubs require you to be a national member to go on their tour. One tour is sponsored by the MTFCA in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. It is scheduled for June 19 – 24, 2022. The second tour is sponsored by MTFCI in Hamilton, Ohio, July 17 – 22, 2022. Jay said both tours are a wonderful experience and a great opportunity to meet with like-minded people and experts in Model T repair and restoration. He absolutely guarantees a week of fun while driving our Model Ts around the countryside.
- Jay opened the meeting up for general comments and discussion before we adjourned.
- Mel King asked the group if anyone could help him diagnose and repair the generator on his 23 Roadster. Mel said there is no indication on the dash ammeter that his generator is working properly.
- Trey Gwaltney asked the group to submit news items and pictures to him for inclusion in our newsletter. Any event, like the Virginia Fall Classic Car show would be great. Trey does an outstanding job putting our newsletter together, but he needs your help to tell the story. Please jot down a few thoughts and send them to Trey. If you haven’t provided Trey an article before, now is a good time to help him out. Thanks to Trey, our newsletter rivals the best Model T publications in the nation!

Jay mentioned he would like to get as many different year models and types of Model T vehicles to the show with 12 – 15 as our target number. Please let Jay know if you can participate with your Model T. Trailer parking is available near the event. See flyer.
- Bryan proposed we meet this Sunday June 20th 12:00 pm at Surrender Field in the Yorktown Battlefield National Park for a drive through the area. Although this is short notice, you are welcomed to attend. If you have any questions, you can reach out to Bryan at 513-594-1876.
- Jay talked about the upcoming MTFCI National Tour in New Philadelphia, Ohio, July 18 – 23 2021. He and Debbie are going to attend and they will send us updates along the way!
- Jay also mentioned plans for the 2022 MTFCA National Tour June 19 – 24 2022. This tour is hosted by the Dairyland Tin Lizzies in Wisconsin. Jay said he would like as many members as possible from our club to participate. This is a great opportunity for all of us to get together for a week of fun with our Model Ts. Mark your calendars now.
- Jay also made a request for club member to pitch in and propose drive events for our club. We talked about a Smithfield drive like we did the year before last. Trey mentioned he could help set something up again. Other trips could include Gloucester or Matthews County like we previously did. The important issue to note is we need club member participation to not only propose a drive but also help to set one up. So please propose some ideas we can all get behind and support.
The meeting was adjourned around 8:00 p.m.

- Jay showed us the completed work on the side curtains to his 1919 Touring Car. He explained the difficulty in matching up some of the material and said he purchased additional material and added it to the existing curtains to fully enclose the cab.
- Mark talked about his projects including the frame up restoration on his 1915 Roadster. He discussed the front and rear end rebuilds and body work in progress. He also talked about potential tours we might like to take as a club in the Isle of Wight and local areas.
- Max mentioned his acquisition on new welding equipment and his desire to educate himself and others on welding techniques for Model T repairs and rebuilds. He also talked about local drives we might want to take like the one last year on Colonial Parkway or even taking the Jamestown ferry and driving into Surry County.
- Bryan took us on a virtual tour of his garage and show us his latest acquisition of a Model T on skis. Conversion kits were popular in areas of the country where cars were often no match for deep snow in the winter. Model Ts were converted into snowmobiles by replacing the front tires with skis and the rear tires with caterpillar treads, allowing the vehicle to move easily over snow and ice.
- Trey announced our club’s submission for the 2021 MTFCI Founder’s Appreciation Award in honor of Jay’s continued commitment to helping each member of our club preserve and make our automobiles road worthy while preserving the history, heritage, and legacy of Model T Fords.
- Trey also requested stories and inputs for our next club newsletter. He mentioned any items of interest that highlight our club members and Model T projects would be greatly appreciated. Since we all have stories to tell, he will be anxiously awaiting your inputs!

Other business included:
- A discussion about privacy concerns. This centered around members giving their permission to use pictures and other personal information in our newsletter, web site, publications and media. Trey Gwaltney addressed this issue and indicated we might want to have a member only area on our web site that is password protected. We determined a first step should be to have new members indicate on their club applications whether they want any information shared. Trey also showed us his tri-fold printed newsletter and said we might want to consider printing copies to pass out at various events we attend. He also said we might consider mailing them to members who may not have access to email. That lead to a comment that maybe we should charge a fee upon initial application to our club or we could all donate to support a paper publication of our newsletter.
- Jay Pearsall’s discussion about the upcoming tour in Windsor, NC May 25-26. This was invitation from the Albemerle Area Chapter Model T club. The 100th anniversary celebration of Newport News' historic Hilton Village on Saturday, July 7 and The National Model T Tour in Butler County Pennsylvania, July 15-20.
- Terry Bond mentioned an open invitation to visit his workshop and collection of automotive memorabilia as well as participation in a “MG Tech Session” during the first part of November. The tech session is in Great Bridge and covers everything automotive including Model Ts.
- Trey Gwaltney’s current progress on his 1924 Roadster. He brought various parts to the meeting including his transmission, flywheel and magneto.
- Ken Wissinger said he would like to hold the next meeting at his home in Poquoson sometime in August. He would also like to make this a visit to Riggins Motors and encouraged club members to drive their Model Ts to the event.
- Max Lindsay discussed some electrical issues he’s been having with his 1915 Touring; discovery that a securely latched coil box cover improved operation (better contact), but needed help troubleshooting a headlight shorting issue and a potentially weak spark on Magneto.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:40 p.m. with a peek at Scott Nylund’s garage, his 1917 Touring car and starter rebuild project.
